Spinning an Apple until it Explodes at 28,500fps - The Slow Mo Guys

4.8M views357

Compressed air can be used to levitate rounded objects. Sometimes said rounded objects start spinning so fast that they give up on being round objects. Gav films all the action over 1000x times slower than real time. Check out KiwiCo.com/SlowMoGuys and get your first month free!

Spinning an Apple until it Explodes at 28,500fps - The Slow Mo Guys

    Published on Month ago

    1. The Slow Mo Guys

Dan is still unable to enter the US by air due to Covid. Don't worry, though. I've heard reports that he went underground and started tunneling this way in April. - Gav

      1. Seth Gower

        @Thomas Mortimore 😂😂

      2. Aliy Han

Hi. that slow sound actually real or layer with sound design??

      3. Phill Black

So big block in a car spends up to around 7000 rpm. Max..... So what you're saying is that an apple is a big block LOL nope lol..... It's a corny joke

      4. Manolo Orz

u look kinda sad having to do everything on your own

      5. The World In Slow Motion

    2. Ghostly Gaming

I’m sorry but you guys have 14 mil subs so why not just buy a better slo mo can (ik money comes through views not subs)

    3. Dead Flanders

I had to read the title twice. I was like, whuh?

    4. SD.

Don’t rev your turbo charged Apple past 6500 rpm and keep those rods happy

    5. socron gaelith

Physics: The g-force of the rotation is so powerful it rips the apple from the inside out.

    6. Giannis Michalakopoulos

Maybe if you weight the two half pieces that split you get the same weight at each one. That means it splits at the center of mass axis

    7. Travis Richey

I love how you can just call @SmarterEveryDay and be like "hey I need to explode an apple, gimme your fastest camera!" TBH I'm a little jelly. ~Trav

    8. Korothi

omg i havent watched his videos in a while why does he look like homeless jesus

    9. Colin P.

I always love seeing how slow the human reaction is

    10. Unseen World Productions

    11. Vijay Khare

U can go even slower at 1,14,000 fps, just play it at 0.25x speed. Kinda slower.

    12. Nate. Beez

      Fruit ninja in real life

    13. Wahfreak

I have a question: How did you trigger the 2511 given how long it took from the initial start of rotation the the actual splitting of the apple? It looked to be around 25 seconds of record time. This is way longer than the buffer in my camera (around 5 seconds). Did you use the continuous record function?

    14. Ralfs Mednis

    15. Varshathi Durairaj

How late was his reaction , when busted

    16. baki ikab

Naruto should've used this for his rasengan.

    17. Юрий Назаренко

That's how our universe was born

    18. Matt Horrocks

I came here for the other guy. Slow mo guy's guys

    19. NakMuayTim

Just got to Clench and hope for the best

    20. Guilherme Vasconcellos

The human eye can only see 30 fps

    21. Duncan Van Ooyen

I love science, what an incredibly bizarre phenomenon. Just a levitating apple, the force not even coming from directly underneath.

    22. Martin Zeballos Toledo

you should do it with a baseball ball

    23. Irve augustine

He described exactly what he saw 😂

    24. Digital Tog

why not try this same thing but add colored smoke to the mix so we can see how the air is moving.. and i skip sponsors. youtube premium

    25. Gin

this was posted on mi birthday :D

    26. Andy Mitchell

Never mind the apple splitting, i think it's fascinating to see Gav's reaction in slow-mo on that first take. The apple breaks and hits the visor. By the time it's out of frame, Gav blinks due to the oculomotor system reacting. Shortly after there's the movement from the head as the brain finally gets the message. Follow that up a little later with the rest of the body getting the signal to protect itself.

      1. TheRealIceCat

It makes him look dumb but its just the body lol

    27. granand

Can we do slos motion on people going to die ..what exact moment people die ..

    28. zetsumeinaito

Gavin looking like he's prepping for a Cast Away remake.

    29. 1derScore

      slow mo guy

    30. Capdex cox

      Nope speed, LOL

    31. Romain Paindavoine

I'm dissapointed, the rev limiter of an apple is around 6500 rpm, I'm waiting for the Vtec version.

    32. nick boehm

      Golf ball next!

    33. Aliy Han

Hi. that slow sound actually real or layer with sound design??

    34. Joe Dorcas

Do it to an ORANGE and a GRAPEFRUIT. lol.

    35. Blue Prince

So if I Spin Earth, Can I Split it too? Le me spin earth 1M per sec🤣

    36. Gregorius Viknar

It gives me the taste for a good ol'apple fresh of the tree 😋🍎🍎🍎

    37. mcmahon31619

2:13. This perfectly demonstrates the importance of needing to where eye protection. The Apple was gone and would have hit you in the face before you even closed your eyes

    38. Santiago Cardenas

      Do a tennis ball

    39. Adrian S

so the slow mo guys don’t have a good slow mo’ camera and need to borrow one? that’s... ironic

    40. S M

      Slow Mo girls?

    41. Martin Tovar

?????... sorry but i thought i was clicking on a Linus Sebastian video... on the Thumbnail this dude totally looks like Linus. i liked the video any ways.

    42. weetabixharry

Why did he stop saying his surname, N'imedan?

    43. Vincent Rozanes

So at 3000 RPM, if we estimate the circumference of the apple to be of 25cm, that gives 3000*0,25*3,6 = 2700kph...

    44. Ernie Smith

2:15 - Wow! Though the physics demo here is awesome, IMHO this is a much more fascinating neurophysiology and psychobiology demonstration. From what is likely primarily visual input, we see a delay to blink reflex, to a more complex multi-system involuntary flinch reflex, then the feed back as it registers in cognition which we see fed back to recognizable facial expression. Neat!

      1. Andy Mitchell

I just posted a similar comment before seeing this. You can really see the oculomotor system kick in way too late, but way before the head movement when the brain finally gets told what's happening.

      2. StLexion

Loved watching the Apple explode and just waiting for him to react, the Apple has been and gone, some slower pieces just finish whizzing past his head before he's even reacted

    45. Fake Man

Jake Gyllenhaal really need a haircut

    46. N Kemp

      Rotato FASTER appl gO

    47. Sener S

      Doesn't look realistic. Why exploded?

    48. David sorin

    49. Damien's Adventure

I want to see the kitteh in slow mo. Just not spinning

    50. Frost

      Orange next 🍊

    51. Udhay Manhas

      this is karate kid

    52. Tini Tv

    53. Gamertag

The NBA needs these types of slow motion cameras

    54. Don Kiddick

Has that dude gone for the Catweazle look... ?

    55. Dr. Dave Salisbury PhD., MBA

How much air do you need to replicate this with a watermelon?

    56. 邱至民

It is funny when the apple hit on his mask and disappeared. After all these things happened, he looked like something reminded him that it's time to blink.

    57. mtorngren15

Now do a slow mo of wet bread

    58. Spencer Case

Your sponsor is kiwiCo and you didn’t think to repeat this with a kiwi?!?!?!?!

    59. Earth

Why did you stop at apples? Orange? Kiwi? Onion?

    60. Samuel Hughes

      lord farquaad

    61. Daniel V.

First of all the change of direction was sick af. Second, where is the other guy? Isn't this "The Slow Mo Guys" not the "The Slow Mo Guy"?

    62. Brian Plotts

How fast does earth spin and why doesn't it just come apart

    63. Kristian Perez

      is this Rhett’s little brother??

    64. PoliBlox

    65. Drones

You know it's about to explode when it slows down and goes in reverse.. it's spinning so fast it's actually reversing time and goes back to before it existed..

    66. Tree Growth

I've seen people split an apple with their hands and the split is in the exact same spot at the clip at 4:30. interesting.

    67. Pharoc

I'm surprised that the hole in the Apple didn't cause problems. One would think that would cause the object to fly across the room. Or perhaps that is what caused the catastrophic breakdown of the structure of the item. Another video perhaps. Thanks to you, Dan and Destin.

    68. Ethan Harper

This video is hilarious. You look like a caveman levitating an apple.

    69. Paul Vanukoff

109 spins per second. That is amazingly fast. Nice.

    70. David Darrow

But what's the redline of an apple with forged internals?

How dare you post something so awesome!! Great experiment.

    72. tombeer9

How do you slice your apples? With compressed air

    73. Paul Teller

Apple sentenced to death by *speen*

    74. Vizaar

watching an apple go terminal velocity is actually kinda funny ngl

    75. black bored

I wonder how the thumbnail looks like Dr. Jackal from Shaktiman

    76. Nathan Sauter

Wouldnt it be RPM? Why and how do you measure that in FPS?

did you say.. "THAT IS BACON!"

    78. LoveJuice

3:45 is the coolest part lol

    79. naride

apples rotat e app le rotato FASTER apple go g O can u fEEl it, a p bpple ? YES FEEL TH E SPED WE HAVE RHAHCED MXAIMUN VELOCIPY

    80. Morbid Man Music

      Tom Greene

    81. Ryan Cribari

Jumping from old videos to new ones is amusing. This is caveman Gav.

    82. Seba Sayt

      Awesomeee slowmooo!

    83. Steve Pepin

I'd love to see this done with other objects like a tennis ball, baseball, ping pong ball, golf ball, etc.

      1. MAXNAZ 47

Those items will float just fine and build up a healthy speed but won't fly apart like the apple did.

    84. Al Jay

There's a gaming channel called massacreman101 and there's a guy named Gavin on it that looks almost just like you. Suspicious.

    85. Piotr Pilarski

Actually, you don't need a super-slow-mo shot to estimate the 'nope RPM'. Whenever the apple seems to stop while it's still spinning that means that it's spinning reached the frequency of the light in which we observed it - in this case around 50Hz assuming this was filmed in the US. You can see the first apple seems to stop twice and then spins a little bit more and pops. So it reached a little over 100Hz or 100 revolutions per second, i.e. around 6000 RPM.

    86. Shinobu

The only thing slower than this video is lecture classes

    87. Rahul Singh

he looks like. shaktiman ka jaickal

    88. Harshil Patil

So he is the guy from maths textbook buying 100 apples just for this

    89. insectbah

I never thought the progression from spinning CD to vinyl record would lead to apple

      1. insectbah

also, major props for bravery and filming this as a single human

    90. FlipNasty

It's crazy how slow it makes his reaction time seem when the apple explodes... looks so delayed with the high speed camera

    91. Tide

      dislikes must be from apples

    92. motbus

started liking Smarter Everyday just because he helps gav

    93. xavier scott

someone please gav's face right after the apple popped into a meme

    94. Arnold Sherrill

Nope speed needs to be part of scientific lexicon from now on

    95. Arnold Sherrill

Wonder how many air compressors it would take to levitate and do the same thing to a pumpkin ? Curious minds want to know brings new meaning to the phrase" chunking your pumpkin" or in this case if you did it correctly pureeing it

    96. Jkjkjkjk

      Gav got dat moses beard

    97. Roko’s Basilisk

      Hello jesus

    98. NoSkill PG3D

Ping pong ball and hair dryer 👍 It's pretty fun

    99. Billy Long

      Sounds like Godzilla
